Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role 

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Senior Adviser, Official Information and Privacy to join our Legal Services team on a permanent, full-time basis. This role is based onsite at the Kelburn campus in Wellington. Flexible working arrangements are by negotiation.

The Legal Services team are a small team who are dedicated to supporting staff across the University to manage legal matters including the University legal obligations related to the Official Information Act 1982 and the Privacy Act 2020. We pride ourselves on a collegial approach that ensures we support each other as a team and have fun as we work.

Key responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the collection of information and manage all responses to information requests on behalf of the University.
  • Draft, review and finalise responses to information requests, ensuring statutory timeframes are met.
  • Provide clear, practical advice to staff and leaders on Official Information Act and Privacy Act obligations.
  • Support the preparation of the Legal Services team response to Ombudsman and Privacy Commissioner investigations related to information requests.
  • Develop and improve systems, processes and reporting for managing all University information requests.
  • Design and deliver training to build capability and good practice across the University in relation to Official Information Act compliance.

You will be a confident, experienced adviser with strong judgement and a practical, solutions-focused approach. You enjoy working in complex environments, can balance legal obligations with organisational needs, and communicate clearly with a wide range of audiences.

Key requirements:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Official Information Act 1982 and preferably the Privacy Act 2020.
  • Proven experience managing and responding to Official Information Act requests.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex matters clearly.
  • Highly organised, with the ability to manage competing deadlines and work autonomously.
  • Strong relationship management skills and the confidence to work with senior leaders.
  • Strong technical skills to manage record searches and large volumes of information.
