The Utah Division of Consumer Protection is seeking a Technologist to work shoulder-to-shoulder with our investigators, combating unfair and deceptive practices with existing and emerging technologies, like data privacy issues and AI-enabled products used for scams, deep fakes, and consumer-facing tools like AI chatbots. This role emphasizes technical comprehension (e.g., software engineering, dark patterns, tech policy, making sense of internal documents, evaluating large datasets), and will be complemented by other team members with policy, business, and legal expertise. You will bring technical insight to complex investigative and policy questions. As a technologist on our team, you will augment the Division of Consumer Protection’s existing investigatory expertise by researching and evaluating a wide range of businesses and business practices related to technology, AI, and data privacy. Your work will protect everyday people and help ensure an environment of increased trust in Utah’s business community. You will also gain valuable experience for the rest of your career, as former regulators are highly valued in the business world.
 
A hybrid telework schedule may be available after training if desired, although some regular in-person work will be needed.

 
Key Responsibilities

Your roles and responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following: 

  • Lead or contribute to cross-functional projects applying technical expertise to support investigations, research, and program implementation.
  • Track and analyze emerging technologies and shifts in the digital marketplace to identify risks, gaps, and opportunities for the agency’s work.
  • Understand business models and consumer rights related to relevant investigations.
  • Deliver insight into technology, data science, system analysis, and related fields to provide actionable information to assist investigations.
  • Monitor relevant laws, policies, and statute, and advise leadership on their implications.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The perfect candidate for this position is someone who has strong technical skills and can apply these skills to answer investigative questions. We are looking for someone who can speak to any audience, and translate complex ideas to non-technical audiences.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  •  Experience executing or leading technology projects using skills in software engineering, design, product management, data science, or research.
  • Experience using data, research, or user insights to identify novel problems and develop solutions.
  • Ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical colleagues and contribute to shared organizational goals.
  • Demonstrated experience creating content (memos, reports, presentations) that explains complex technical subjects to both expert and non-expert stakeholders.
  • A track record of independently solving problems and reliably delivering on project goals or assignments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience implementing and deploying AI or other software, particularly in a business context. 
  • Expertise in aspects of public policy and/or law related to technology. 
  • Experience in regulatory investigations. 
  • Advanced training or education in a related field such as Computer or Data Science, AI/ML, Law, and Public policy with a focus on Technology or Information policy.
