Data Steward – Data Classification & Privacy

This is a remote position.

Role Overview

We are looking for a Data Steward to help build and maintain a trusted, privacy-preserving data platform. You will be responsible for understanding and classifying data across multiple sources, identifying sensitive information, and assessing potential privacy and disclosure risks.

The ideal candidate enjoys investigating datasets, identifying hidden patterns and risks, and working closely with data owners and privacy stakeholders to ensure responsible data usage.

Key Responsibilities

• Own and maintain the data inventory across multiple sources, databases, tables, and columns.
  
• Classify direct identifiers, quasi-identifiers, sensitive data, and other personal information.
  
• Profile unfamiliar datasets to identify hidden or previously unidentified personal and sensitive data.
  
• Conduct re-identification and disclosure-risk assessments on datasets.
  
• Maintain and update data classification catalogues as schemas and datasets evolve.
  
• Work closely with the Data Protection Officer (DPO) and other privacy stakeholders.
  
• Document data classification decisions, findings, and the rationale behind them.
  
• Collaborate with data owners and engineering teams to investigate data characteristics and potential privacy risks.
  
• Identify inconsistencies and gaps in data classification and recommend appropriate remediation.
  
• Support data governance, privacy, audit, and compliance initiatives.
  

Requirements

Required Skills & Experience

• Strong SQL skills with hands-on experience in data profiling and analysis.
  
• Understanding of data governance, data quality, privacy, compliance, or audit processes.
  
• Strong statistical understanding of cardinality, uniqueness, distributions, and data patterns.
  
• Strong analytical and investigative problem-solving abilities.
  
• Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
  
• Ability to work effectively with data owners, engineering teams, privacy teams, and other stakeholders.
  
• Strong attention to detail with the ability to document findings and classification decisions clearly.
  
• Experience working with large or complex datasets.
  

Nice to Have

• Knowledge of k-anonymity and l-diversity.
  
• Understanding of data generalization and suppression techniques.
  
• Familiarity with GDPR and data protection principles.
  
• Python for data analysis and profiling.
  
• Experience with entity recognition / PII detection.
  
• Familiarity with data catalogues and metadata management.
  
• Experience in audit, risk, fraud investigation, or research ethics.
  
• Experience with data privacy and disclosure-risk assessment.
  
• Experience working with UK or international clients.
