Major Duties

  • Reports directly to the Global Privacy Head of Operations.

  • Coordinates activities essential to mapping, identifying, developing, maintaining, and overseeing the execution of privacy operational initiatives that support the implementation of the Global Privacy Policy and associated standards throughout Northern Trust.

  • Requires a strong regulatory, technical, business, and functional background in privacy operations, particularly in coordinating privacy policies and standards, risk assessments, and control monitoring.

  • Communicates effectively with business units and operational functions to ensure privacy controls are integrated into business processes.

  • Coordinates and oversees processes and tools necessary for completing Privacy Regulatory Impact Assessments and Data Protection Impact Assessments.

  • Assists in the maintenance and oversight of action plans that support the execution of controls, ensuring completion annually within defined timeframes and in accordance with established methodologies and systems.

  • Assists in maintaining and overseeing action plans adopted in response to Global Privacy Audits and Global Compliance Testing.

  • Coordinates and oversees the execution and completion of Privacy Risk Monitoring Plan activities.

  • Coordinates action plans to support privacy projects as they arise.

  • Participates and presents in committees to represent Privacy Operations.

  • Builds and maintains strong working relationships with global, regional, and local privacy, risk, and compliance teams, as well as with business units and operational functions subject to privacy and information processing requirements.

  • Applies problem-solving skills, analyzes possible solutions using technical experience, judgment, and precedents.

Knowledge

The position requires a solid understanding of risk management and the strategic objectives of the bank’s business and the financial services industry. In-depth knowledge of privacy risk regulations—including both privacy and financial services regulations—gained through formal education and work experience is essential.

A proven track record in supporting and coordinating privacy risk and incident management, compliance strategies, policy and governance frameworks, and the implementation of controls to effectively manage compliance risks is required. Experience with current working practices in the financial services industry is necessary, including providing technical advice; managing risk; overseeing outsourcing arrangements; implementing information security controls; conducting data protection impact assessments; and ensuring compliance and governance.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to adapt to changing priorities while maintaining focus on organizational and team objectives. Strong communication and analytical skills are required to consult with partners and clients, analyze information, and apply relevant regulations. The role also demands high flexibility and adaptability to change, expanded conceptual knowledge within the job discipline, and an understanding of key business drivers to achieve work objectives. The ability to explain complex information in straightforward situations is also important.

Experience

Candidates must have a minimum of seven years of experience in the financial or banking industry.  Additionally, a minimum of seven years of working knowledge and expertise in risk management and operations—or a related field such as privacy—is required. A bachelor's or college degree is necessary for this role.

Preference will be given to candidates holding the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) or equivalent privacy certifications.
